Animated show intro

3D Motion graphics class

Description

For this project, I was tasked with creating the intro credits to a TV show or movie in a three-dimensional space, which in this instance was for the Amazon Prime show The Boys.

Challenge

Making a credit sequence that not only feels emotionally tactful to the themes and vibes of the show, but also showcases certain aspects of what the show is about in an interesting yet spoiler-free manner, since the show doesn’t have a traditional credit sequence to draw inspiration from

The Boys, as a TV show, is known for its gritty and brutal action, as well as its emphasis on character-driven narratives. It was essential throughout the process to find methods to actualize these traits and do so in an intriguing way for viewers of the show, so ultimately emphasizing the characters and the action in the sequence was the primary goal.

Diabolical Deconstruction

Solution

All of the characters are static silhouettes to create visual contrast and emotional depth from both the 3d objects and the lighted background. In addition, the transitions exist to show all of the main characters, as well as some of the most important or memorable parts of the show from throughout the first three seasons in a concise and intriguing manner.

A Super Amount of Stylization

The final variation of the motion graphic relied on a blend of 2D and 3D elements, focusing on silhouettes and shadows for an easier render and more intriguing set pieces, which is ultimately what led to its final compositing, layout, and tweening.

Overlapping elements that emphasize depth

Exaggerated sense of scale and atmosphere to imply mood

Blending of 2D and 3D elements in a scene, embracing contrast

Subtle references to events in the show for connectivity
