Animating type to sound

Motion graphics class

Description

For this project, I was tasked with creating a video for an accompanying audio file scene, this specific one being from the 90s TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, which shows an accessibility of type to sound.

Challenge

Match the onscreen text to the audio given in all aspects to make it feel naturally included, from the timing of the vocals to the level of emotion that comes out of the characters throughout the clip.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, as a TV show, was known for its unapologetic personality, both within its 90’s aesthetic and between its characters and the topics they discussed. determining how best to represent the emotional pathos from the show in its imagery, while still keeping everything readable through the scene’s fast-moving dialogue, was vital to the process.

Brainstorming in Bel Air

Solution

In order to match the 90s aesthetic, the colors and font are derived from the title card of the show, with gradients and 90s-style typography, and depending on how fast the characters are speaking, the text adjusts in stillness as well for clarity when reading. In addition, the colors gradually become redder to emphasize the emotionally charged anger as the scene progresses.

Styled with Substance

The final variation of the video conveyed the vibe of ebonic flow and story structure that the scene intends to depict, which led to a refinement in the video’s coloration and timing within the appropriate timeframe (after making some slight alterations to the original footage’s length).

Different colors and text depending on who is talking for easier comprehension

Imagery accompanied by text for added visual representation

Warmer color changes for emotion emphasis

Dynamic text movements with aesthetically matching style
